TogetherWePlay is dedicated to fostering social-emotional learning (SEL) and facilitating restorative justice through engaging play experiences and restorative intervention. Our approach supports students’ holistic development, focusing on self-awareness, social-awareness, and community-building to repair relationships. By addressing conflicts constructively, we promote a positive school culture where every student feels heard, valued, and accountable, with opportunities for growth and learning. Through the TogetherWePlay initiative, we engage elementary students in activities that teach teamwork, problem-solving, and collaboration, helping them develop critical SEL skills. Playtime becomes a valuable opportunity for students to navigate social interactions, manage emotions, and practice responsible decision-making in a fun and supportive setting.
Program Components
- During recess, our SEL Coaches introduce inclusive play that actively engages students, encouraging broader participation. By fostering an environment where students are excited to join in, we create a vibrant and inclusive playground experience. Here, students have the opportunity to practice and reinforce the tools they've learned during class lessons and activities led by the SEL Coach, further developing their social-emotional skills in real-time.
- We empower students through our Junior Coach Leadership Program, where selected students learn games, develop leadership skills, and practice conflict resolution strategies. These Junior Coaches take turns leading activities at recess, promoting leadership and peer mentoring within the school.
During class time, SEL Coaches lead interactive activities and workshops directly in students' classrooms. These sessions introduce key social-emotional learning (SEL) concepts through cooperative games, lessons, and hands-on activities, equipping students with essential skills for success both on the playground and in life. Students then have the opportunity to immediately apply and practice these skills in real-time during recess, reinforcing their learning and development.
Our Restorative Justice Interventions provide students with the opportunity to address conflicts in a constructive and supportive setting. Through restorative circles and one-on-one conversations, SEL Coaches guide students to reflect on their actions, understand the impact on others, and find ways to repair harm. These interventions foster a sense of accountability, empathy, and open communication, helping students learn from their mistakes while rebuilding trust with peers. This approach not only resolves immediate conflicts but also contributes to a more inclusive and positive school culture, where every student feels valued and heard.
We provide comprehensive training for teachers, yard staff, and school administrators, focusing on effective classroom management and restorative practices. These sessions equip staff with strategies to integrate social-emotional learning (SEL) into daily routines, manage classroom dynamics, and facilitate restorative circles. Yard staff learn techniques for promoting inclusive play and addressing conflicts during recess, while administrators receive guidance on implementing a school-wide approach to SEL and restorative practices. Ongoing coaching ensures staff are supported in creating a positive and cohesive learning environment.
